Facebook lists hottest status updates of 2010

Guess what the hottest trend in status updates was for 2010? Use of the phrase "HMU." If you're only marginally hip (like me), explanations are probably in order. That stands for "hit me up." (And if you're terminally unhip, "hit me up" means "contact me."). Apparently lots of people were using Facebook as the starting point for -- dare I say it -- person-to-person communications. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Check out the rest of the list of top status updates here.

What was your favorite status update meme of 2010?

Does talking on the phone technically qualify as real life person to person communication?

Well, good correction, Dan. I'm going to scratch "real life" from my sentence.

My favorite meme was the Dry Erase girl who pretended to quit her job and outed her boss - LOL

new motto for Facebook: where uninteresting people take morbid facination with the lives of other uninteresting people.

Agreed. Pathetic facebooking lives here. Get out and enjoy your life and deal with real people for the love of God! Makes me sick to my damned stomach.

While Facebook may indeed be pathetic for some, for my friends and family all spread out it is an awesome way for us all to stay in touch and share with eachother en masse, it is great for us!

To the poster above me, and by your statement you mean its a great way to keep in touch for those that are too lazy to actually maintain a friendship or any other social connection by actually seeing them or calling them. And Eric, nothing against you personally but are you on the Observer's payroll or Facebook's because you should probably be paid by them with as much free press as you supply them.

Oh my. The lack of civility continues online, even with those that are mocking online social networks! Why doesn't "anonymous" follow his or her own advice, break away from the computer, and phone a friend? I love the connections I can foster via facebook, and have reconnected with old friends from college and high school through it. Personally loved the random acts of culture and the a cappella groups singing Lady Gaga.

All the Facebook haters, have you ever maybe considered that us Facebookers do in fact USE the program as a tool to socialize MORE? A lot of my friends, myself included, create "events" on FB and invite a bunch of people with a click of the mouse. We can discuss details within this medium, like who is bringing what, when, who is coming late, etc. It's great, and I dont have to make 20 individual phone calls.

Many of my friends and I also send messages over Facebook to DISCUSS our plans for hanging out, gasp, IN PERSON. And I've been re-connecting with people I haven't seen in years and years, some of whom live halfway across the world. Yet you call it "laziness"? How easy would it be to individually keep up with 251 (how many Facebook friends I have) people, each of whom I know in some way, shape, or form?? Sorry but I work full time and always have something going on, so it is not laziness but rather BEING BUSY LIVING LIFE. Perhaps you are too wrapped up in your own negativity to see that.

I am also "friends" with various companies on Facebook who alert me to "facebook fans only" discounts and specials. Anyone who is anti-Facebook just because of the principle of it, well you're missing out, so go enjoy being a hater. Leave the rest of us to enjoy our social lives, even if it is VIRTUAL. You all sound like a lot of fun.

Why don't you enjoy being a sorry lemming and do something worth while. You have no idea what true socializing is all about. You have become addicted to the damn computer and you are trying to justify it any way you can. If you want to know what someone is bringing to an event, CALL THEM. If you want to talk to someone or especially play private investigator and try to find out every little detail of their pitiful online life, why not take a breath and ask them over the phone or in person.

Don't fool yourself with a bunch of foolish talk about connecting with relatives and all that crap. You are the flavor of the month and this is just yet another out of control fad that will go with time. Thank God. Now, run along and jump on the computer, all your cyber FRIENDS are waiting to know what you ate for lunch!!!

To the high schooler above who said, "Anyone who is anti-Facebook just because of the principle of it, well you're missing out", you just go right on believing that garbage, you young naive child. YOU are missing out - on real life, and you don't even know it!
